From a historic partnership with the African Union to the award of 300,000 Euros to six organizations under the European Union-funded ‘Initiative for Transitional Justice in Africa’ and several stories of impact from the work of our partners in the field, we have exciting updates to share with you in the latest edition of our quarterly newsletter – Trails of Justice. We are delighted to invite you to journey with us as we walk the trails of the footprints we have made promoting transitional justice in Africa over the past quarter.

ATJLF and the African Union Sign Historic MOU

ATJLF has signed a historic Memorandum of Understanding with the African Union, recognizing over six years of collaboration in which ATJLF has supported the implementation of the African Union’s Transitional Justice Policy. This support has included seconding experts and program staff to the AU’s Department of Political Affairs, Peace and Security and acting as the fund manager for the African Union-European Union Joint Initiative on Transitional Justice.

ATJLF Approves €300,000 to support  CSOs under the EU-funded Initiative for Transitional Justice in Africa

ATJLF, on behalf of the Initiative for Transitional Justice in Africa consortium, has announced the approval of €300,000 in sub-grants as part of the African Union-European Union Joint Initiative on Transitional Justice. This funding currently supports six organizations across Africa that are working to advance transitional justice through the transformative values of the African Union Transitional Justice Policy.

Partner Spotlight

Our Partner, Kishimi Shelter and Care Foundation is providing 1,000 trauma victims in North-East Nigeria with mental health and psychosocial support. This intervention will go a long way in addressing the neglect survivors in that region often face due to inadequate survivor-centric interventions.

The Centre for Research and Policy Development

ATJLF’s grantee, the Centre for Research and Policy Development (CRPD), has contributed to transitional justice, security sector reform, and human security programs in The Gambia. This training manual, developed by CRPD with funding from ATJLF and adopted by the Government of The Gambia, is a notable contribution to the country’s transitional justice efforts.

OUR IMPACT STORY

MRCG introduces a Course on Transitional Justice and Media at the University of Sierra Leone

ATJLF’s partner in Sierra Leone, the Media Reform Coordinating Group (MRCG) has established a course module on Transitional Justice and Media at the University of Sierra Leone. This course which is the first-ever in the history of the school, provides training for mass communication students on transitional justice and how media can be used to advance its course. Additionally, the course will create more public awareness about transitional justice issues in Sierra Leone and the African continent at large.

ATJLF Convened a High-Level Consultation on Reparations and Racial Healing

On 20th July, ATJLF under its Justice and Repair Project organized a high-level consultation with the objective of mobilizing action for a global advocacy on reparations and healing for legacies of historical injustices against Africans and the Global African Diaspora. Organized in partnership with the African Union, the Africa-America Initiative, and the Diaspora Affairs Office of the President of Ghana, the event produced key outcomes for advancing the advocacy for reparations.

ATJLF at the 8th African Transitional Justice Forum in Mauritius

ATJLF participated in the 8th African Transitional Justice Forum in Port Louis, Mauritius, held from September 11-12. This year’s Forum, which brought together transitional justice practitioners from across Africa, focused on transitional justice and education on the continent. The ATJLF team was represented on a panel discussing the ‘Role of Education in Restoring Communities after Mass Human Rights Violations.’ ATJLF is proud to be a long-standing partner supporting the convening of this annual Forum.
