Press Release
On behalf of the Initiative for Transitional Justice in Africa (ITJA) consortium*, the Africa Transitional Justice Legacy Fund (ATJLF) is pleased to approve another sum of €300,000 in sub-grants under the ITJA as supported by the European Union and the African Union. The grantees selected from across Africa will implement projects aimed at promoting transitional justice in Africa while advancing the indicative elements of the African Union Transitional Justice Policy (AUTJP) as home-grown transitional justice mechanisms.
This grant will build on the foundation established through the initial €300,000 awarded in the first cycle of the project by expanding opportunities for the meaningful engagement and empowerment of historically marginalized groups and communities, enabling them to actively participate in and take ownership of transitional justice processes. Supporting the second cohort of six grantees under the project, this new funding brings the number of grantees under the ITJA to twelve (12). The six grantees under the second cohort will contribute to the development of transitional justice in Nigeria, South Sudan, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, and The Gambia by implementing projects to drive accountability, justice, reconciliation, and peacebuilding. This cycle of funding will advance the following objectives:
Nigeria – Invictus Africa
The objective of the Tech-Driven Transitional Justice Project is to establish a secure digital documentation system that preserves the testimonies of over 100 survivors, amplifies their voices through multimedia storytelling, and tracks at least 100 gender-based violence (GBV) cases. The project aims to increase public awareness, promote survivor protection, and advocate for gender-responsive policy reforms in transitional justice processes.
South Sudan – Invisible Women Inclusion (I-WIN)
The project aims to build an empowered community equipped with knowledge and capacity to access legal services and exercise their human rights. It focuses on enhancing justice awareness, promoting frontline conflict resolution, and improving the protection of citizens’ rights through increased access to justice mechanisms.
Zimbabwe—Tree of Life (ToL)
The project’s objective is to promote trauma healing, strengthen social cohesion, and support transitional justice processes in Matabeleland communities affected by political violence and torture. It aims to advance community-based justice and healing through mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) within a transitional justice framework.
South Sudan—Youth Affairs Center Africa (YACA)
This project seeks to close the gap in youth participation in transitional justice by developing a digital platform that allows young people to share their experiences and perspectives. It aims to amplify youth voices, foster national dialogue, and contribute to inclusive, youth-responsive justice mechanisms.
Ethiopia– Tigray Human Rights Advocacy Network (THRAN)
The project aims to ensure that transitional justice processes in Ethiopia are victim-centered and in alignment with international standards. It focuses on increasing victim participation, promoting inclusive justice efforts, and strengthening community-based support structures through advocacy and awareness campaigns.
The Gambia—Gambia Center for Victims of Human Rights Violations (Victims’ Center)
The objective of this project is to increase public understanding and participation in The Gambia’s transitional justice process by popularizing the African Union Transitional Justice Policy (AUTJP) and the government’s White Paper on the TRRC recommendations. The initiative aims to empower victims, foster reconciliation, prevent recurrence of violations, and strengthen long-term justice and accountability.
The Initiative for Transitional Justice in Africa (ITJA) consortium is composed of the International Center for Transitional Justice in Africa, the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation and the Africa Transitional Justice Legacy Fund.
